DES MOINES, Iowa – Another round of severe weather could affect central Iowa this evening into tonight.

Meteorologist Amber Alexander said a boundary moving through the state will help trigger the storms. Severe weather has already been reported in the northwestern part of the state and the storms are expected to move east.

“Sunshine Central Iowa saw this afternoon has helped to destabilize the atmosphere, adding fuel to storms that approach the area resulting in a higher chance for severe weather,” Alexander said.

Over the next several hours northern Iowa will see some of these storms pass through with strong winds and some large hail being the main threats. A few, isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out.

A secondary front farther to the west will bring in another chance for storms after sunset tonight. Because these will be following areas that have already cooled down significantly due to rain from the first line, these storms will not have as much potential to be severe as the first line does.

Thunderstorm chances return to the forecast next week.
