A former Iowa State runner who qualified for the London Olympics is missing the opening ceremonies.

Guar Marial, who is a refugee from Sudan’s civil war, is stuck in Arizona because of visa problems.

The International Olympics Committee cleared Marial to run under the IOC flag last week, because his South Sudan is a newly independent country and has not established a national Olympic committee yet.

Marial says by competing in the marathon, he’s honoring all those who lost their lives in the Sudanese conflict, including 28 members of his family.

Marial’s event is scheduled for August 12th.

You can watch opening ceremonies on Channel 13 beginning at 6:30 p.m.
