Drake Relays officials announced Tuesday that the annual Grand Blue Mile will also serve as the USA Track and Field One-Mile Road Championship.

The addition is expected to attract Olympic-caliber athletes from across the country as they vie for a national title.

The one-mile road race that loops through the streets of downtown Des Moines draws more than 4,000 runners to compete in categories ranging from elite to recreational.

More than 2,500 people are already registered for the 2013 event scheduled for April 23.

Several 2012 Olympians will be in attendance and will be announced closer to the race.
