Disappointing, Hawkeyes Lose to Nebraska in OT

IOWA CITY – Hawkeye fans were hoping to end the regular season on a high note with a win over Nebraska.  Instead the black and gold faithful left Kinnick Stadium frustrated and disappointed.

The Huskers beat Iowa in overtime 37-34.

The Hawkeyes jumped out to a 24-7 lead after a muffed Husker punt was scooped up by Drew Ott for a Touchdown.  But Nebraska kept chipping away and eventually regained the lead 28-24 after an 80 yard punt return by De’Mornay Pierson-El.

Jordan Canzeri put Iowa back on top 31-28 with a 5 yard TD catch, with less than 2 minutes to play.  But,  the Hawkeye defense could not make the big stop.  Nebraska kicked a field goal to send the game to overtime tied at 31.

In the OT Iowa got the ball first but had to settle for a Marshall Koehn 25 yard FG to take a 34-31 lead.  Huskers QB Tommy Armstrong won it for Nebraska with a 9 yard TD pass to Kenny Bell.

Jake Rudock finished with 230 yards passing and 2 TD’s for Iowa, but the Hawkeyes also committed 4 turnovers.

Ameer Abdullah was held to just 106 yards rushing, but Armstrong made all the big throws finishing with 4 TD’s, including the game winner.

Iowa finishes the season 7-5 having not beat a team with a winning record.  The Hawkeyes also lost all the trophy games.  Iowa now awaits their bowl destination.

Nebraska finishes 9-3.
