POLK COUNTY, Iowa — One person was killed and three others injured in a head-on accident just east of Pleasant Hill Tuesday night.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office says the accident happened in the 7100 block of NE University Avenue, just after 9:30 p.m.

Witnesses told authorities a westbound Nissan Pathfinder was hit head-on by a Nissan Altima, which was traveling east in the westbound lanes.

“One thing we know is the Altima was traveling in the wrong direction on University Avenue and we’ll also see if alcohol played a role in the collision,” said Polk County Sheriff Sgt. Brandon Bracelin.

“We just heard this loud bang, like a garbage can being hit by a baseball bat,” said Bruce Purdy who lives a few hundred yards away.

Purdy and his wife ran outside and saw the two cars.

“We knew something bad had happened,” he said.

The 20 something-year-old passenger in the Altima died at the scene and the driver was taken to the hospital. The driver and passenger of the Pathfinder, both in their 70’s, were also transported to the hospital for treatment.

“A very serious accident and our thoughts go out to the families of all individuals involved,” said Bracelin.

Officials have not released the names of anyone involved in the crash or the conditions of the survivors.
