A woman is being checked out at a local hospital after driving her car into a pond.

It happened around 11:00 Thursday morning at the Norwalk exit off of Highway 5.

A witness driving behind her says she was going the speed limit and suddenly veered off the road. He says the car went into the air and crashed into the shallow pond.

He says after a few moments, she crawled onto her roof. She told him she blacked out and doesn't remember a thing.

“She said her feet got cold, and that's what woke her up, and it was just the water starting to flood into her car. It was amazing. It was, God bless her. God was watching out for her, definitely,” said witness Ron Hartfield.

Norwalk Assistant Fire Chief Ryan Coburn says they used a floating rescue board to get the woman out of the pond safely. He says it is likely the woman suffered from a medical complication that caused her to pass out.

Paramedics took the woman to a local hospital to be evaluated.

Norwalk Police, Des Moines Police, and the Norwalk Fire Department all responded to the scene.
