PERRY, Iowa -- The former Perry US Post Office, and later School Administration office has now been turned into an events center.

Two women learned the old post office was up for sale, with not much for funds, they bid $1 to the building owner, the Perry School District. The women, Jenny Eklund, and Mary Rose Nichols also shared a dream of turning the vacant building into an event center. The Perry School Board accepted their bid unanimously.

"Every single one said yes we accept your dollar bid,so we got the building for a dollar," said Eklund. "Then we had to find a bank that believed in us and believed in our dream to create and that wasn't easy to do." Thus was born La Poste, or french for post office.

"We haven't really gone to market it's just word of mouth," said Eklund.

They created an elegant space on the upper floor with the giant windows. They have restored the original post office entry, and recreated the postal clerk window. The women have shared their vision all over town, about trying to restore the building as much as possible, while making it into an events center.

Pointing to the big arch-topped windows Eklund said, "because of the windows, this is where the brides fall in love."

The women and other volunteers helped to strip all the paint from the brick walls of the basement, creating what's now called "The Cellar." In the center of the room is a giant boiler which serves to heat the entire building, and serve as a sort of art work in the middle of everything.

The La Poste has booked wedding receptions, graduations, a prom event, and all kinds of events.  It also hosts one called Handlebar Happy Hour, for people who want to bike to stop by The Cellar after work.

The LaPoste also has a website, where people can learn more about the effort to restore the old post office.
