Law enforcement officers rescued a man from a submerged semi early Thursday morning in Jasper County.

A 911 call was made just after 2:00 a.m. about debris on I-80, just east of the 159 interchange. Jasper County Sheriff’s deputy Jeremy Burdess arrived on the scene and located a semi-tractor trailer submerged in Prairie Creek, which runs under Interstate 80.

The Colfax Fire Department, Barney’s Wrecker Service, Newton Officer Adam Herman and Baxter police officer Joe Bartello responded to the scene to assist Burdess.

Burdess, Herman and Bartello entered the 12-feet deep water and found the driver was trapped inside the cabin in a small air pocket.

Bartello swam underwater to lead the driver, 70-year-old Dwayne Michael of Granger, out of the vehicle. Colfax EMS transported Michael to Des Moines area hospital.

The Colfax and Prairie City Police Departments also assisted in the rescue.

The investigation into the cause of the accident continues.
