DES MOINES, Iowa – The general public has an opportunity to help homeless people get off the streets through Joppa Outreach.

Joppa has been selected as Iowa’s lone finalist for the Opus Foundation’s first annual Gerry Rauenhorst Building Community Award. Joppa was selected along with eight other finalists around the nation that best represent Gerry’s commitment to entrepreneurialism.

A winner will be announced on April 22 and awarded a $62,000 grant. If Joppa wins, the nonprofit will use the money to help evicted homeless people obtain housing, according to a Joppa press release.

Joppa is dedicated to serving homeless people who live under difficult circumstances in metro Des Moines.

“Everyone can help Joppa increase its community impact by voting online and spreading the word to their friends and coworkers,” says Joppa cofounder and CEO, Joe Stevens. “It’s easy. Just go to and vote for Joppa Outreach, then post it to your Facebook and other social networks.”

The deadline to vote online is April 17.
