Iowa’s newly appointed State Auditor has agreed to investigate allegations of improperly used federal money by Iowa’s Secretary of State.

Auditor Mary Mosiman’s office will begin looking into fellow republican Matt Schultz’ use of a federal grant to investigate voter fraud. Prior to the 2012 election Schultz hired a DCI Investigator to seek out illegal voters. Critics argue that Schultz paid the agent using funding from the federal Help America Vote Act and that grant money was supposed to be used for voter education.

In January, the Inspector General of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission said they were going to be looking into the issue, but The Des Moines Register reports that due to lack of sufficient members to hold a quorum the commission will not conduct their review.

Instead Mosiman’s office will perform the investigation and report their findings to the commission as well as Schultz’ office.

Mosiman has elected to have her Chief Deputy lead the review because she previously served as Schultz’ Deputy of Elections until her appointment last month.
