DES MOINES, Iowa — Several residents were displaced after a fire broke out at an apartment building on the southeast side of Des Moines Sunday afternoon.

At around 3 p.m. the Des Moines Fire Department responded to a report of a fire at an apartment in the 2000 block of Virginia Avenue. When fire crews arrived they discovered flames coming from a balcony on the second floor of the building.

According to the fire department, the fire was contained to two units, one on the first floor and one on the second floor. Only one of those units was occupied. No injuries occurred during the fire.

Investigators are still working to determine what caused the fire. It is unknown how much damage the fire caused and how long the residents who occupied the affected unit will be displaced.
