Des Moines police are investigating two homicides that happened just ten hours apart, this weekend.

In the first, a Chicago teenager was shot inside a forest avenue apartment. Then, today, 20-year-old Kenyatta Taylor died from his injuries.

Taylor was shot outside the Oakridge apartments just before noon on Sunday. Both crimes have put neighbors on alert.

Channel 13 spoke with police and Oakridge community leaders Monday and they have a plan to address the issue.

The Oakridge community says they will have to work harder to keep the crime away and that starts with impacting the youth.

More than 600 kids below the age of 18 live in the apartments.

Teree Caldwell – Johnson, CEO of the Oakridge neighborhood says making sure kids keep busy...keeps them out of trouble.

The police department has a summer program to help kick the violence when crime usually spikes but this year they are getting a head start.

“With the increase in shootings we've seen up in that area to date this year, were going to being that program about a month earlier which starts tomorrow,” says Sgt. Jason Halifax.

The Oakridge neighborhood will hold a community meeting for its residents to ask any questions or concerns regarding the incident.
