Some of Iowa’s unclaimed treasures are headed to the auction block.

When safe deposit boxes across the state go unclaimed, the Treasurer’s office holds them for 7 years, if the owners aren’t found, the items must be sold.

“When the bank can’t find these folks, they hand them over to the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt, and when we can’t find these folks, the law requires us to sell the stuff.  So, that’s what we’re going to do on Cyber Monday,” State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald said.

Items like jewelry, antiques, silver coins, and sports cards will be up for sale on E-Bay on November 26th.

The proceeds from the forgotten treasures will go back into the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt, then they will be donated to various organizations throughout the state.
