Des Moines police are investigating the theft of an exotic pet.

Sandra Bommert says her 25-pound pet tortoise was taken from her yard. Bommert filed a police report Sunday after discovering her Sulcata tortoise, a female named Lucky, was missing from an enclosure in her back yard.

Bommert lives near 14th and Madison, and says she went outside to feed Lucky and she wasn’t there. The enclosure was still locked but the bottom of the gate had been bent away from the frame.

The police report says Lucky is worth up to $1,000.

Bommert says you can recognize Lucky because of her distinctive markings. She is missing part of the top of her shell due to improper care by her previous owner.
