A new penalty kicks in Wednesday for people with unpaid parking tickets in Des Moines.

If you have a ticket that is more than 130 days past due, you’ll get a notice with your license plate renewal forms in the mail. If you don’t pay, you don’t get your tags.

When the citations are paid in full, the license plate will then be eligible for renewal.

The city of Des Moines says more than 18,000 people owe fines, totaling more than $834,000.

Some tickets even date back a decade.
