UNION COUNTY, Iowa – Three men are dead following a fishing accident near Creston.

Law enforcement responded to a report of a possible drowning shortly after 8 p.m. Saturday at a farm north of Creston. Police said that three men had gone fishing Saturday afternoon and failed to return.

“They apparently went ice fishing, and hadn’t returned,” said Creston Fire Chief Todd Jackson told the Creston News Advertiser. “Somebody went back to check on them, and they just found the hole in the ice and all the equipment on the ice.”

Rescue crews located the men’s bodies within an hour of arriving at the pond. The victims were found 20 feet from shore.

Officials have identified the victims as Earl Burkhalter, 71, Charles Critz, 73, and James Oshel, 68, all of Creston.

More information is expected to be released Sunday.
