WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — A portion of Highway 5 was closed after a rollover accident involving a tanker truck hauling fuel Friday morning.

The Iowa Department of Transportation closed the highway between IA 28 and I-35. A detour was set up using Army Post Road.

Witnesses told police they saw a truck headed westbound on Highway 5 flip several times before coming to a rest on its side about 7:50 a.m.

Officials say the truck was hauling 4,491 gallons of gasoline and 3,498 gallons of diesel. The truck had just been filled up Friday morning. It came to rest in the median and leaked fuel into a nearby storm drain.

Hazmat crews were on scene along with emergency personnel from Clive, Norwalk, West Des Moines and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

The semi driver was pulled from the truck by a passerby and taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Officials reopened Highway 5 at about 3:30 p.m. Friday.
