AMES, Iowa — A total of 13 students from the Ames Boys and Girls Club got a lesson in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) at a very unusual place.

The students went to Jack Trice Stadium to get a tour to see what’s new.

One thing is new cellphone technology. US Cellular explained they have new towers on each flagpole designed to cover a section of about 5,000 fans at a time. The stadium is divided into zones, and each flagpole/zone will make sure people have data to upload pictures of their friends at the game.

Also, former Cyclone standout football player Ben Bruns, now with Weitz Construction talked about projects he’d worked on improving the stadium since his playing days ended. That includes the Bergstrom Center, the new Sukup End Zone, and the new press box.

He showed how his company used computer models to design and built the new Sukup End Zone project.

Bruns also talked about studying engineering while in school at ISU.

Two engineering students now at ISU explained what it is like to study engineering and that there are many types of engineering you could go into.
