Sparky the Bison, Who Survived Lightning Strike, Has Died

JASPER COUNTY, Iowa  —  A famed member of the Neal Smith Buffalo Herd has passed away.

This weekend the National Wildlife Refuge in Jasper County announced the death of Sparky the bison. He got his nickname after surviving a lightning strike back in 2013.

Sparky lived a long life and fathered three calves before the lightning strike.

There are currently about 90 bison living on the refuge.
