A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for a Des Moines man accused of stabbing his son to death.

Eighty-two-year-old Floyd Loggins Sr. is charged with first degree murder. Des Moines police say he stabbed his son, 54-year-old Floyd Loggins Jr., Friday night.

“It’s pretty rare to see that elderly of a suspect being arrested for murder but it does happen,” says Des Moines Police Sgt. Cindy Donahue.

Investigators have not released a motive in the stabbing.

“I have not been made aware of the particulars of the dispute. All I know is that it started as a verbal dispute and it escalated into physical,” says Donahue.

Neighbors say the fights between the father and son could get loud.

“You could hear them yelling inside and just arguing back and forth, bickering,” says next door neighbor Dominique Settles.

Settles didn’t know the son very well, but says he and the older Loggins always got along.

“He’s a really good guy. He was a good neighbor and so it’s sad to see something like that,” says Settles

Loggins will be in court for a preliminary hearing next Tuesday.  He is still in the Polk County Jail, being held on a $400,000 bond.
