Drivers slowed down for the morning drive into work Friday. The Iowa Department of Transportation reported roads mostly to completely covered with snow or ice before 5 a.m. State, County and City crews worked through the night and during the morning commute to clear roads.

By 7 a.m., main roads and the interstate improved greatly, with slick spots remaining on bridges, overpasses and exit ramps. The Iowa DOT urged drivers to give snow plows extra room, don't use cruise control and stay off cell phones.

The Iowa State Patrol reported a quiet overnight, but said cars remain stranded in ditches and on the side of the road. Driver Isaac Hageman drove from Minnesota overnight. He says, "Getting into Des Moines is where it has been the messiest by far. And, I've seen a lot of wrecks alongside the road, and some in the medians, big trucks and SUV's, cars and everything."
