DES MOINES, Iowa- Shannon Stimple went to Small Business Saturday last year in the town of Stuart.  That left a big impression on her. “Thought that was really neat, the whole town turned out,” said Stimple. “So I kind of wished something like that happened in Des Moines,” said Stimple.  She created “Small Business Sunday.”  Small Business Saturday is conducted in the metro in Valley Junction and the East Village.

The Small Business Sunday event featured around 20 or so artists doing everything from jewelery to cupcakes. With the artists being from Des Moines and surrounding areas.  The event was held at Z’s Bar and Grill.

“Art comes in many forms, so we’ve got bakers, we’ve got food gifts,” said Stimple. “We’ve got all kinds of different art, body art, airbrush art.” Stimple said the big thing she learned about promoting an event like this, is networking.  She hopes to stage another such event in the spring with artists in a small business setting.

One of the artists displaying was Betsy Hemping of Mitchellville. “I like to do native American art and show it’s not dead,” said Hemping.   She said this type of art has much to offer, “show that it’s still out there, old art with a new flair.”
