The Des Moines branch of the Salvation Army is doing its part to make sure students are ready when the upcoming school year begins.
Working with local Target stores, the Salvation Army awarded 72 students with an $81 back to school shopping spree. Each student was paired with a volunteer to help them pick out supplies.
According to Salvation Army Special Event/Volunteer Coordinator Amara Hartley, “This opportunity allows a kid to actually choose what they want instead of worrying about a budget. I can buy a Hello Kitty folder for $2 or get 5 for 1 and that way they get to actually enjoy what they’re getting and not be budgeted.”
The Salvation Army will hold two more shopping sprees before the 2013-2014 school year starts.
