A shooting late Thursday night in Iowa City left one man dead and set off an alert to University of Iowa students and faculty about a shooter on the loose.

The Iowa City Police reported a shooting off campus just before midnight. Paramedics took 30-year-old Donnelle D. Lindsey to the hospital but he passed away.

The man who fired the shots has not been caught and police say they are still following up on leads in the case.

The shooting prompted police and University of Iowa Public Safety to send out a Hawk Alert.

It reads, “Shooting occurred in the area of Melrose and Morman Trek. Police are looking for armed subject. If you are in the area remain indoors. Don’t confront suspect. Call 911 only if you have info or an emergency.”

Hawk Alert is used to notify the campus community of threats to physical safety in emergency situations.

Messages are sent by phone or email and also go out over Facebook, Twitter and on the university’s website.
