The students at a local youth shelter had a reason to celebrate, Wednesday.

Opera singer Simon Estes came to watch their talent show and to offer words of inspiration.

Estes has been helping Youth Emergency Services and Shelter (YESS) to raise money to build an expansion.

Estes’ visit coincided with a huge donation. Variety – The Children’s Charity presented a $300,000 check for the project.

“And we know that there is a great need out there with the closing of some shelters and so forth that we need to step up and we need to provide the shelter that`s needed for these kids,” Variety’s Sheri McMichael said.

When it`s complete, the two-story addition will feature 32 single rooms designed for children healing from especially difficult traumatic experiences, plus space for art, play, and music therapy.
