Ames police are warning hotel guests about a scam that could let their credit card numbers fall into the hands of criminals.

Police say they’ve received information about hotel guests being targeted by the scam. Guests are getting calls from someone claiming to be a hotel employee saying the computer system has crashed and they need the guest’s credit card information again.

In some cases, the scammers are promising the guests a partial refund because of the inconvenience.

Ames police warn the public they should never give credit card information over the phone if they can’t verify the identity of the person they’re speaking with. They also say the scam isn’t happening just in Ames and people should be cautious when they travel.
