The city of Des Moines’ latest honor won’t come as much of a surprise to residents who like to run.  The Road Runners Club of America named Des Moines the Outstanding Runner Friendly Community of 2012.

The RRCA commends the city on the long list of runs available to residents from the Dam to Dam to the Des Moines marathon as well as hosting several competitive track and field events like the Drake Relays.

According to the RRCA Des Moines has the community infrastructure, civic backing and local business support needed to foster a safe and inviting environment for runners.

Mayor Frank Cownie says he is proud of the honor, “In recent years, the City has gone to great lengths to improve the connectivity of the over 40 miles of city maintained trails, in order to provide our citizens the opportunity to lead and maintain healthy lifestyles.”
