A tanker truck lost control on Interstate-80 near De Soto spilling hot tar all over the road.

The accident happened around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, causing the Iowa State Patrol to close both westbound lanes on the bridge over the Raccoon River while the accident was cleaned up.

Officials say the driver may have experienced a medical problem causing him to lose control hit the guard rail and flip the truck on it’s side. He was taken to the hospital. His condition is unknown.

Traffic near exit 110 for U.S. 169 had to be detoured for several hours while the truck was removed and the tar was cleaned up.

As of 5 p.m. the left lane was still closed, but traffic was no longer being detoured.
