Saturday night in Dayton, rodeo-goers honored a teen that was abducted and murdered this spring.

“I want to thank the family of the Shepards for being strong and recognizing that this community is a family.  She will be sorely missed,” said Dayton Mayor Richard Travis.

The Dayton Rodeo called for people to paint the hill purple in honor of Kathlynn Shepard.

The community came together on Saturday night at its annual Labor Day celebration.

This morning a cowboy 5K for Kathlynn was held.

More than 4,000 people in attendance were asked to do what they could to help strengthen Iowa laws to prevent future abductions.
