A Des Moines firefighter was hurt Wednesday night, but not because he was fighting a fire.

Firefighter Robbie Hilzer was standing behind a fire truck, helping it back onto Army Post Road. Hilzer says he saw a car heading straight for him without slowing down or changing lanes, so he made a quick dive towards the ditch to avoid being hit by the car.

He was held overnight at Mercy Hospital for evaluation.

Fire officials say it’s the law to slow down, move over or stop when you come upon an emergency vehicle on the scene of an incident.
