A Vietnam veteran has finally received the honors he deserved for his service more than four decades ago.

Friday morning Iowa Congressman Leonard Boswell presented John Orthaus of Urbandale the Purple Heart medal. He also received a Good Conduct Medal for his actions.

Orthaus was wounded in action in 1968. He came back home to the metro following his injury.

It wasn’t until recently when he went to the VA for care that he and his wife realized his paperwork didn’t show he had received the Purple Heart. That’s when they contacted Congressman Boswell.

Orthaus says he’s surprised how quickly Boswell’s office worked to correct the problem.

“I was really appreciative how fast this came about.  I mean I really thought this was going to take some time but after a week of sending the letter we received notice from the office, said they were going to pursue it and a couple minutes later he called back and said we had the medal. So again we’re very appreciative for the work being done,“ says Orthaus.

Congressman Boswell is also a veteran of Vietnam.
