A Des Moines mother serving time in connection with the 1998 death of her infant son has been released from prison.

Heidi Anfinson was released Wednesday morning from the Iowa Correctional Institute for Women in Mitchellville.

She was originally convicted of second degree murder, but she was awarded a new trial in 2008. She then pleaded guilty to multiple counts of child endangerment and was serving a 50 year prison term.

Anfinson’s son, two-week-old Jacob, was found underneath rocks at Saylorville Lake in 1998. Anfinson originally claimed Jacob was abducted, then told investigators he died at home in the bath tub and she didn’t know what to do.

The parole board approved Anfinson’s release at the end of October. She has spent more than a decade in prison.

As part of her release she will not be allowed to work or live with minors.
