DES MOINES, Iowa -- Sen. Tom Harkin has helped secure federal funding for several Des Moines projects during his years in Congress.

To mark his retirement, he's touring some of those sites. Monday that brought him to the Science Center of Iowa.

Harkin says he's secured more $7 million for arts and science in Des Moines. A little more than $2.4 million went to the Science Center of Iowa. It was used to purchase exhibits, specifically an astronomy educational exhibit called "Why the Sky."

While visiting the Science Center Monday, Sen. Harkin toured the new dinosaur exhibit. It opens to the public on October 10th.

I’m fascinated by the Science Center of Des Moines, I’ve been associated with it ever since its beginning. I was able to get funds for the science center, it’s a great place. My grandkids fell in love with this science center and so do I,” says Harkin.

Harkin will retire after the November election. He says he's looking forward to spending more time in the Des Moines area with his grandkids.
