Advocates for hungry Iowans delivered a special message to lawmakers at the statehouse Wednesday afternoon.

Directors from Iowa’s eight food banks, representatives from food pantries and volunteers delivered 1,000 paper plates with handwritten messages from Iowa’s hungry population.

They hope the plates will encourage the house to pass a state emergency food program. The bill would give $2 million to the food bank associations to help pantries keep food on their shelves.

“The federal commodities have been shrinking the past few years, so the shelves have become empty. So it’s up to the food banks to purchase that food to make up,” State Director Cody Berkene said.

Every single senator and representative got a plate with a story on it Wednesday.
