DES MOINES, Iowa -- Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, a Republican, told the world Tuesday morning he is running for president. Seventy-two hours later, he will tell Iowans in person.

Friday morning, Paul is scheduled to host his first Iowa event as an official presidential candidate. He will hold a gathering at 10 a.m. at the University of Iowa's Student Union.

Paul first announced he was running for president on Twitter.

Hours later, he announced his candidacy to supporters in Louisville, Kentucky. "Today I announce with God's help, and the help of liberty lovers everywhere, that I am putting myself forward as a candidate for president of the United States," Paul announced.
