GLENWOOD, Iowa-In a Special Election held Tuesday, Glenwood Farmer David Sieck defeated Steve Adams of Red Oak to replace Rep. Mark Costello, who was elected to the Iowa Senate to replace Joni Ernst.  The total was 1082 votes for Sieck, and 404 votes for Adams, according to the Iowa Secretary of State.

“I’ve been involved in economic development and rural issues over the last 20 years,” said Sieck. He said he wants to represent rural Iowa in Des Moines.

“I’m extremely concerned as the cities continue to grow faster,  that they have more and more voice, our voice becomes less and less,” said Sieck. “We need strong voices out here, to stand up and make sure we’re heard, and the things that are important to us are considered.”

Sieck said his number one issue is fixing roads in rural areas. “It looks like this year with fuel prices being low that some action may happen,” said Sieck.  “One of the things that’s making it happen is that a whole lot of counties are starting to bond the bridges and roads,” he added. The Glenwood farmer is concerned about borrowing long-term to fix roads and bridges.

The long time Glenwood resident said he is encouraged by the Governor’s efforts to increase internet speeds and access in rural areas. “We’re seeing some jobs lost in our area  because they can get a lot faster and cheaper internet in the cities,” said Sieck.

Being a farmer. Sieck says serving would not be too inconvenient in the winter. “The hardest thing will be when you get towards planting season., having to be in Des Moines, but that’s part of the job,” said Sieck.

With a win Tuesday night, the House GOP Caucus expects him at the Capitol early Wednesday morning to be introduced to lawmakers.
