DES MOINES, Iowa — Three people were hurt and traffic was blocked for several hours after a stolen car struck a utility truck near Drake University.

Des Moines police say it all started when an officer spotted the car and attempted to pull it over. It happened just before 3:40 p.m. at the intersection of 31st Street and University Avenue.

Police say when the driver noticed they were being pulled over, they took off at a high rate of speed, forcing officers to call off the chase.

“When you start thinking about the zone characteristics and the time of day — certainly any school zone — we’re not going to have a high speed pursuit through there. You have to weigh the risk with reward for us and the reward isn’t worth this. So that’s why we called it off,” said Des Moines Police Sgt. Paul Parizek.

Police say the driver ran a red light and was hit by an oncoming truck.

One person was seriously injured. Two others suffered minor injuries.
