FORT DODGE, Iowa — A motorcyclist was killed early Monday morning in Fort Dodge after attempting to elude police.

The Fort Dodge Police Department says an officer tried to pull over a motorcyclist around 3:07 a.m. in the area of 7th Ave. North and North 15th Street after observing they were traveling at a high rate of speed. The motorcyclist refused to pull over and accelerated, trying to get away from police.

In the 1700 block of Williams Drive the officer saw the motorcycle had left the road and hit a mailbox and a tree. Emergency crews were called immediately and when they arrived the motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials are not releasing the name of the motorcyclist at this time as they continue to notify family members of the death.
