IOWA CITY, Iowa – An autopsy has been scheduled for a body found in Iowa City Friday night.
Police believe the body, which was found in the trunk of a vehicle, is connected to the disappearance of Iowa State University student Tong Shao, 20.
Police blocked off part of a parking lot near an apartment complex in the Dolphin Lake Pointe area of Iowa City Friday from 6:30 p.m. to investigate the contents of a parked car. After a warrant was issued, a body was found in the trunk of the vehicle, a beige 1997 Toyota Camry with Kentucky license plates, which police believe the junior chemical engineering student had access to.
However, police haven’t released the identity or sex of the individual found as of Saturday morning.
An autopsy has been scheduled with the Johnson County Medical Examiner.
Police say they’re treating the case as a homicide investigation.
Shao was last seen at about 7 p.m. on September 6. On September 8 she called friends and told them she was in Iowa City. She hasn’t been heard from since.
Ames police believe the friend Shao went to visit returned to China on September 9. They haven’t been able to make contact with him.
