POLK COUNTY, Iowa – A man was hit and killed by a vehicle at the east mixmaster, shortly after noon Monday.

Sgt. Nate Ludwig with the Iowa State Patrol says the accident happened on the inside shoulder of the eastbound lanes of I-235, where it crosses over I-80.

According to the report, the victim, 52-year-old Wayne Scott Major of Ankeny, was trying to pick up something off the road. The Iowa State Patrol says an item fell out of the back of a pickup truck that two people were using to move some items.

The report says Major got out and tried to retrieve the item and was hit by a mini-van driven by 24-year-old Megan Breanne Hofman of Norwalk. The Patrol says Hofman pulled off on the shoulder after the collision.

“People don’t realize how fast these vehicles are moving. I’ve been doing this job 29 years and I’ve seen everything out here. I deal with vehicles out there and the speeds they move. If you lose something out the back of a pickup truck, the best thing to do is to leave it there and don’t go back and get it. It’s not worth your life,” said Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Scott Bright.

The accident is under investigation.
