Des Moines Police are investigating the death of a 69-year-old man. Robert Conn was killed Saturday night after being run over by a car in a parking lot. It happened around 10:30 PM outside the Eagles club on SE Bloomfield.

Mike Cossitt heard a commotion in the parking lot.

“As soon as I went outside, it was obvious what happened. It was disgusting, it was not a good thing,” he says.

Police say 42-year-old Troy Sowers of Urbandale was driving the car that hit Conn, a well-known Eagle member and past trustee of the organization.

“I'm still in shock,” says Cossitt.

So is fellow Eagle member Brian Lord. He was driving by and stopped when he saw all the police cars out front.

“I seen the body and I pretty much got into hysterics,” says Lord.

He worried that it was only a matter of time until someone got hurt. Lord has watched cars speed through the parking lot more times than he can count.

“That's a parking lot, that's not a street. People drive through there like, they driver faster than Bloomfield,” says Lord.

Lord even had that conversation with his friend, Bobby.

“We said someday you know someone is going to get hit out here,” he says.

As police try to determine what happened Saturday night, Conn’s friends and neighbors remember a man always ready to lend a hand.

“He mowed lawns for people around the neighborhood and mowed lawns at the Eagles club,” says Cossitt.

“He's a good guy. He's a number one member up there and is going to be well missed,” says Lord.

Sowers was booked into the Polk County Jail for OWI. He has since been released. Police say he stayed on scene and cooperated with the investigation. As of Sunday night, no charges have been filed in the accident.
