A Des Moines park is looking better after volunteers from the Meredith Corporation spruced it up.

Meredith employees held a building blitz at Columbus Park, just south of downtown.

They installed new playground equipment, sidewalks, benches and landscaping. The group also fixed up five homes in the surrounding neighborhood — inside and out.

“The stuff were doing doesn’t sound like a lot but it’s a lot of projects her and her son started when they bought the house before he passed away and she just couldn’t bring herself to finish afterwards, so we’re coming in and we’re  finishing what they started,” says John Gaspari with Meredith.

The city of Des Moines paid $8,000 to help with the work, but most of it was paid for by a $50,000 donation from Meredith.
