DES MOINES, Iowa–The college football season opening weekend saw the Iowa State Cyclones suffer a devastating loss and the Iowa Hawkeyes survive a push by in-state rival, University of Northern Iowa.

The Cyclones’ opponent, North Dakota State, is a FCS team, the level below the Cyclones’ FBS level. However, the Bisons are three-time national champions. And they played like champions, crushing Iowa State before a sold out crowd at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames, 34-14.

Meanwhile, Iowa also played before a home crowd at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes survived a strong effort from Northern Iowa, which like North Dakota State, is a FCS team. The Hawkeyes held on to win 31-23.
