Sixteen-year-old Corey Hamilton Jr. is described by his friends as an all-around good guy.

“He was really funny, one of the funniest people I’ve met, if you needed somebody to talk to or just a friend he was always there,” says friend Carly Hagge of Des Moines.

Des Moines Police say Friday night around 10:30 they found Hamilton with a gunshot wound to his head at an apartment in the 1400 block of East Walnut.

Hamilton later died at the hospital.

His friends came together Saturday afternoon to cope with the loss..

“You would have never thought it would have been Corey out of everyone, and it's still hard to believe, and it's going to be hard, it's going to be really hard to really think he's not going to be here anymore,” says friend Breanna Billings of Des Moines.

Police say that night they were able to link 15-year-old Dontavius Sharkey of Des Moines to the crime.

They say he admitted to shooting Hamilton and helped police located the gun.

Police say Sharkey was playing around with the gun, which he thought was unloaded when it went off.

Hamilton’s friends say, the next several weeks are going to be tough.

“It's going to be very hard, sad, it's not going to be the same anymore at all,” says Hagge.

Hamilton’s friends want to make sure he isn't remembered as a statistic, but as a spirited teen who was going places.

“He was a great guy, he wasn't like a lot of these other kids he would have made it somewhere, it would have been different,” says Billings.

Police say Sharkey was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless use of a firearm.

Police are still investigating how Sharkey had a gun and if it was registered to anyone.
