DES MOINES, Iowa — One person was killed in a crash involving four vehicles in Des Moines on Monday and police say excessive speed and reckless driving played a significant role in the incident.

The Des Moines Police Department said the crash happened on the northeast side at E. 14th Street and Thompson Avenue around 5:30 p.m. A 19-year-old male from Des Moines died at the scene. A 20-year-old female from Des Moines was hospitalized with serious injuries but is expected to survive.

Police are not releasing the name of the deceased male until family members have been notified.

The Des Moines Police Department is continuing its investigation into the crash.

The northbound and southbound lanes of E. 14th Street were closed overnight between Guthrie Avenue and Mattern Avenue to allow police to investigate the scene but have since re-opened.
