INDIANOLA, Iowa — One person is dead after an Indianola apartment fire early Sunday morning.

Indianola Police Capt. Brian Sher said Warren County dispatch received a call about a fire at the Foxwood Apartments at 1005 West 3rd Avenue just after 6:30 a.m.

As crews worked to put out the flames, they found a body in the living room area of the apartment. Police said the apartment is rented by 64-year-old Linda Langefeld. However, they are waiting on autopsy results to identify the victim. One other person was transported for smoke inhalation.

Authorities are not releasing the cause of the fire at this time, but no foul play is suspected.

“We’re not releasing cause and origin right now. We don’t know. It’s still under investigation. We have representatives from the state fire marshal’s office here working with the Indianola Fire Department and the Indianola Police Department to do a thorough investigation and find out what caused this fire,” said Sher.

Multiple fire crews responded including Indianola, Norwalk, Carlilse, Milo and Hartford. Two apartments in the building have smoke and fire damage.

Right now, 26 residents are unable to return to their homes. The Iowa Red Cross is helping them create a recovery plan by providing casework, comfort and final assistance.
