Officer Shawn Miller Remembered: ‘He had pride, had integrity and guts like no other’

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Family, friends and hundreds of members of law enforcement from across the country gathered in West Des Moines Monday to say goodbye to Senior Officer Shawn Miller.

Miller, a 26-year veteran of the West Des Moines Police Department, was killed in a traffic accident Wednesday in Dallas County.

“It’s never easy to fill the void of someone who meant so much to so many, however even though we’ve lost a beloved son, a brother, a friend and a public servant, Shawn Miller will live on,” West Des Moines Police Chief Shaun LaDue spoke at the funeral. “Shawn Miller will live on and his legacy will always be for what true public service shall be defined well into the future.”

Chief LaDue had planned to promote Miller to the rank of sergeant at the end of the month. A meeting had been scheduled to discuss the promotion, Miller was killed 24 hours before that scheduled meeting.

While speaking at the funeral, Chief LaDue announced that Officer Miller will be posthumously promoted to the rank of sergeant.

“(Shawn) had pride, he had integrity, and he had guts like no other.”

Officer Miller is survived by his wife and three children.
