A Sioux City police officer shot last month during a traffic stop is back on the job.

Officer Kevin McCormick says he pulled over a car for a seatbelt violation, when the passenger got out of the vehicle and opened fire.

Since then 21-year-old Jamal Dean, an alleged gang member, has been taken into custody.

McCormick’s police car was hit eight times as Dean fired on him. One of the bullets went through the windshield and hit his forehead.

Sunday, during his first day back on the job, McCormick went back to the scene of the shooting. He says he’s a bit more aware of his surroundings now.

McCormick got a new patrol car for his first day back to work.
