DES MOINES, Iowa — Crowds of mourners are set to line the streets of the metro Friday morning as the community gives a final salute to one of the two Des Moines police officers killed in a crash last weekend.

Officer Carlos Puente-Morales died early Saturday when his police SUV collided head-on with a driver going the wrong way on I-80 near Waukee. He leaves behind two sons and a daughter.

Puente-Morales’ partner Officer Susan Farrell was also killed in the crash and was laid to rest Wednesday. Tosha Hyatt and Ben Beary died in the crash as well.

Friday morning, funeral services for Puente-Morales are being held at 8:30 at Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in West Des Moines.

Des Moines Police Chief Dana Wingert gave a moving speech about Puente-Morales at a rosary service held Thursday night.

“Carlos was so much more than that. He’s a father, a brother, a loved one, a soldier, and a friend to many people because of the lives he touches,” Wingert said. “There’s no one term that would accurately describe Carlos. The closest I could get would be loyal servant,” spoke Wingert, “You see everything that virtually inspires Carlos involves around a life of service. From his family, to his occupation.”

Cheif Wingert went on to say Officer`s Puente Morales’ actions and his attitude were infectious.

The theme of the rosary service was family. Friends and family spoke on at length on that — it didn`t matter if Carlos just met you or knew you for decades — he treated you like family.

Following Officer Puente-Morales’ funeral Friday morning a procession will escort his body to the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter for burial.
