Mark Thome will be the next mayor of the eastern Iowa town of Gilbertville but he didn’t win any election to gain the spot.

Thursday morning a drawing was held and Thome’s name was selected from a hat.

The Black Hawk County auditor’s office says after a re-count, Thome and a write-in challenger were both found to have 109 votes each.

With the election a tie, Iowa law requires it be resolved by drawing lots.
